IIT JEE 2027 — the complete guide to Main and Advanced

IIT JEE is two exams, not one. JEE Main is the national qualifier that opens the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs; JEE Advanced is the second stage it qualifies you for, and the only route into the IITs. This page covers both — eligibility, pattern, syllabus and the usual schedule — with every claim pointed back at the body that decides it.

How the two stages fit together

Every IIT aspirant sits JEE Main first. It is conducted by the NTA in two sessions a year, and your better score counts. A good score admits you to the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through JoSAA — and, if you rank inside the shortlist, it qualifies you to sit the second stage.

JEE Advanced is that second stage, and it is the only entrance to the IITs. Roughly the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main rank-holders are shortlisted for it. It is a harder paper built around depth rather than coverage, you get at most two attempts in two consecutive years, and the question format changes annually because a different IIT sets it each year.

Both stages feed the same JoSAA choice list, so you do not register for counselling twice.

JEE Main 2027

The national qualifier. Two sessions a year, best score counts, and the gateway to both the NITs and to JEE Advanced.

JoSAA counselling

JoSAA runs one combined process for the IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, so your JEE Advanced and JEE Main ranks feed the same choice list — you do not need separate registrations. Your choice ORDER matters more than most students realise: a seat is allotted to the highest-ranked choice you qualify for, not the best one on your list.

  1. 1

Register on the JoSAA portal once results are out

  2. 2

Fill in your IIT, NIT and IIIT choices in one common list, then lock them

  3. 3

Check the mock allotments and adjust your order

  4. 4

Seat allotment runs over several rounds

  5. 5

Report, pay the fee and complete document verification

IIT JEE 2027 — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
JEE Main is the national qualifier conducted by NTA; it admits you to the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs and decides whether you may sit JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is conducted by an IIT and is the only entrance to the IITs. Main rewards speed and accuracy across a wide syllabus; Advanced rewards depth on multi-step problems.
Do I have to sit JEE Main to sit JEE Advanced?
Yes. Qualifying JEE Main and ranking inside the shortlist — roughly the top 2.5 lakh rank-holders, distributed across categories — is the hard gate. There is no other route to JEE Advanced.
Who conducts JEE Main?
The National Testing Agency (NTA), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education. NTA sets the paper, conducts the exam and publishes the result.
Is there an age limit for IIT JEE?
There is no age limit for JEE Main. JEE Advanced does apply a date-of-birth rule — for 2027, candidates are generally required to have been born on or after 1 October 2002, with a five-year relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Confirm it in the brochure.
How many attempts do I get?
JEE Main runs two sessions a year and candidates are generally permitted to appear across three consecutive years, with both sessions in a year counting as one. JEE Advanced allows a maximum of two attempts, and they must be in two consecutive years — which is why a dropper year needs to be planned rather than drifted into.
Do both JEE Main sessions count, or only the second?
Your best NTA score across the sessions you attempt is what counts. Sitting Session 1 costs you nothing beyond the fee and gives you a real attempt under exam conditions.
What percentile do I need for a good NIT?
It varies every year by branch, category and home state, so treat any specific number with suspicion. Broadly, the older NITs need a very high percentile for popular branches. Use the previous year's opening and closing ranks on the JoSAA portal as your reference rather than a coaching estimate.
Why does the JEE Advanced marking scheme change every year?
Because a different IIT sets the paper each year and each is free to design the sections. Treat the previous year's scheme as a guide, never as a certainty, and read the current brochure before deciding how aggressively to attempt.
Which IIT is conducting JEE Advanced in 2027?
It has not been announced. The organising institute rotates among the IITs and is confirmed when the information brochure is published at jeeadv.ac.in.
Where do I check official updates?
JEE Main at jeemain.nta.nic.in and JEE Advanced at jeeadv.ac.in. Dates, eligibility and pattern are set by those bodies and can change; this page is a summary, not an official publication.
